He then trained in ophthalmology in Cardiff, Belfast and London and undertook a Fellowship in Strabismus with Peter Fells and John Lee at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was appointed Consultant to the Strabismus and Paediatric Service at Moorfields in 1996.

Alongside his clinical commitments he continued his research interest studying amblyopia, binocular function and visual development in patients He has undertaken collaborative studies of the effects of amblyopia and deficient binocular function on hand-eye co-ordination in children and has been involved in the organisation of a UK multi-centre, observational study of the natural history of intermittent exotropia in children.

Following on from this, he was one of the surgeons conducting a randomised controlled study comparing surgery with observation in such children.
